Exclusive Interview : Bruce Lamont (Brain Tentacles)

This past Saturday, Mick and I were fortunate enough to sit down with Bruce Lamont, he of many other bands but currently of Brain Tentacles. BT was in town on their tour with Intronaut and Gorguts that was passing through Chicago, and so over beers we took the opportunity to chat with Bruce about Brain Tentacles, his musical inspirations, songs he'd like to cover, how Luc Lemay is the nicest guy in the world, and many other things!  Check out our interview below!  Also be sure not to miss Brain Tentacles on tour with Gorguts and Intronaut; words do not do this show justice.

Gorguts - Pleiades' Dust

When Gorguts released Colored Sands in 2013, it had been over a decade since the band's last album, and Luc Lemay was the sole Gorgut remaining from that endeavor (as he ought to be).  Colored Sands was a critical smash, Lemay's new lineup - Kevin Hufnagel on guitar, Colin Marston on bass, and Patrice Hamelin on drums - crushed it both in studio and live, and almost immediately people (me) began hoping for a follow up from this edition of Gorguts (it's weird, and I can't explain it, but even though I liked Carcass' Surgical Steel a bit more than Colored Sands, I remain far more excited by the prospect of new Gorguts than new Carcass).  That follow up has been delivered in the form of Pleiades' Dust, a one song EP that spans an even thirty-three minutes.

Maryland Deathfest XII - A Remembrance

This past weekend marked my first journey to Maryland Deathfest, and I was incredibly excited.  In fact, if you ask the Durfette just how excited I was, she'll probably roll her eyes and say something along the lines of "Oh god, he's been talking about this since September!"  Which is only a slight exaggeration, because I got excited about buying tickets in October, and then once I actually got my tickets... well, let's just say MDF was a pretty constant topic of conversation around La Casa de Durfs.  So after seven long months of anticipation, was the experience of a four day metal festival everything I had made it out to be?

Jack's Top 15 Albums of 2013

Hey, remember when the Blackhawks won the Stanley Cup this year? Yeah, that was pretty cool. Also of importance, particularly in relation to things this publication actually cares about as a collective, there were a staggering amount of fantastic albums in heavy music this year. I toiled with what to include in my Top 15 for quite awhile, but while there's plenty of excellent releases I've left off, this is the group of records I not only felt the most strongly about in a positive sense, but also that I feel deserve the most cred. On to the goods, children.

Oh, and it's good to be back.

2013 has been one heck of a year for all of us...mainly because we relaunched Brutalitopia earlier in the spring and are now back in full force with a renewed sense of purpose. Thanks to everyone who's made that possible by supporting us in their respective ways.

Angela's Top What-ever of 2013

2013 was kind of ridiculous. Between all the weird shit that took place to some truly stellar music releases, I think this year is definitely one for the books. I'll be weighing in with my non-metal picks sometime next week, because fuck Christmas. ON TO LE LIST...
