Review: Gojira - L'Enfant Sauvage

There's a certain aura that radiates from Gojira that is at once both staggering and esoteric. The niche the Frenchmen have carved for themselves has the tell tale signs of workmanship from a truly groundbreaking act; often imitated, never duplicated. Their growth from underground darlings to groove metal superheroes has been an exercise in understanding what it is that the heavy music world wants from its torchbearers.  But therein lies the enigmatic position which Gojira currently hold; where do vanguards turn next when their contemporaries have adopted the now auspicious template that they themselves have woven? The answer is modestly self evident; back to the wild where they found their ingenuity in the first place. And that's precisely what Joe and Mario Duplantier and company have done with L'Enfant Sauvage, which shows that even veteran pathfinders find themselves toiling to find their footing in the infantile stages of a new sojourn.

Review: Ahab - "The Giant"

2012 is fast becoming a banner year for doom metal.  We’ve already heard Swallow the Sun’s exceptional Emerald Forest and the Blackbird and newcomer Pallbearer’s breathtaking debut Sorrow And Extinction, and Eagle Twin will soon release their eagerly anticipated sophomore album The Feather Tipped the Serpent’s Scale; those are just the first three that came to mind. I’m sure there are countless other doom albums coming out, making 2012 the perfect year to sit next to a rainy window with a record on the turntable and a glass of scotch in hand, and contemplating the futility and misery of the human existence.  And now German funeral doom masters Ahab have unleashed The Giant, just to spite you and make you cry forlorn tears into your glass while you wait for the Mayan gods to return and release us all into oblivion.

Brand New Veil Of Maya!

A few days ago, Sumerian records released the above clip. It's a teaser for Veil Of Maya's brand new record, Eclipse. Seeing this clip above got me pretty excited to hear some new material from these Chicago natives. Thankfully, I didn't have to wait long. Last night, around 11pm or so, the first single of Eclipse was released. Entitled "Vicious Circles," the new track is mighty impressive. If this is a good indication of the kind of material we can expect from the new album, count this guy as very interested.

Check out "Vicious Circles" after the break.
